SECTION 3: Supplemental (Non-Vacancy Specific) Recruitment Activities Undertaken By WSEN & WFBL
WSEN & WFBL had an intern for the summer (May-August) from the New York State Broadcasters Association Intern Program. He worked a little with the sales department but mainly in promotions since that is where his interest was. During his internship he worked on creating, setting up and executing station promotions and did so very effectively. He had received an Associates Degree in May from Morrisville State College majoring in Journalism Technology and was enrolled at Oswego State University of New York for the fall semester to major in Broadcasting.
WSEN/WFBL took part in Career Information Night at Oswego State University. Our Sales Manager attended had the opportunity to interact with hundreds of students at Oswego State. She spent time with other professionals and many members of the University staff. She was then able to talk about her profession, our business, offer advice, collect resumes and conduct informal interviews. Several resumes were collected and a male student was hired.
WSEN/WFBL Managers all took part in a four hour Harassment-Free Workplace and Equal Employment Opportunity Seminar. This took place on Wednesday, March 14, 2007 with a speaker from a major Law Firm in New York City. During the seminar we learned about the Federal Laws of discrimination and generally how to prevent it in the work place. Most time was spent on the procedures for reporting any incidences and who is responsible for responding and correcting a complaint. General Manager took part in several workshops that set up scenarios of harassment so as to be more familiar with how to handle situations and complaints.
WSEN/WFBL On-Air Personality, was a guest speaker at Emerson J. Dillon Middle School in Phoenix, NY on November 19, 2007 where he spoke with about 40 9th graders, boys and girls, about a career in broadcasting. He shared his written information about broadcasting and showed his video tape of his on-air work.
WSEN/WFBL General Manager, Sales Manager and Promotions Coordinator attended a luncheon at the OnCenter in Syracuse, New York on April 25, 2007 to learn about eliminating racism and empowering women. The luncheon was sponsored by the YWCA and honored selected individuals who participated in programs which promoted and embraced diversity. We ran an ad campaign (PSA) for this event encouraging people to attend and support the idea of eliminating racism and empowering women. This luncheon was important to the stations because we are an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer and encourage women to apply.
WSEN/WFBL On-Air Personality, was a guest speaker at Durgee Junior High School Career Day in Baldwinsville, NY on December 5, 2007. He prepared written information about the broadcasting field as well as showed a video tape of himself actually working on-air. He spoke to about 40 8th and 9th grade students, boys and girls, about the day-to-day workings of a Radio station. Baldwinsville School District has its own radio station and having an authentic On-Air Personality explain his job and experiences helps the students make decisions whether or not to pursue a broadcasting career.
WSEN/WFBL General Manager served as President of Syracuse Executives for 2007. This position required her to schedule guest speakers, develop and implement lead generating programs as well as run the entire meeting each week. Syracuse Executives is a group of business owners and upper management types in a business that meet once a week on Tuesdays. Although it is more of a business to business setting, much discussion is done regarding employment, employees and references. A few candidates have been referred and one male candidate was hired.
WSEN/WFBL air a commercial encouraging Recruitment Agencies to contact us regarding employment with our stations. They are asked to contact the Business Manager if they would like to be informed of any openings at our stations. We run this ad on all stations for one week (15x) every month (staggered weeks between stations). We also update our recruitment sources once a year to make sure of correct address’s and contact persons. This allows us to be efficient when recruiting for a position.
